Here’s what I found on my last few visits to Riverside in February. On February 21 at least there was some sunshine.
Brown Creepers were still hanging out in Riverside Lawn.

Chipmunks were starting to surface.

My best subject turned out to be a White-breasted Nuthatch.

On February 23 there was even more sunshine.

There was enough light to photograph this Red-bellied Woodpecker who is also at the top of the post, even if there was some considerable distance between us.

I was still seeing Brown Creepers.

A Black-capped Chickadee taunted me with a quick visit.

February 26 was cloudy and not very birdy. One Song Sparrow was trying his best. I got better looks at the Red-breasted Mergansers.

This was also the day I had an unusual sighting of a murder of crows. I hope to see them more often. I followed one crow as it flew across the sky after most of the others had left.

The end of February had some really warm days, the rest of which were spent mainly at the Chicago Portage. Now in March, the birdsong is getting louder, and I am starting to see more species return. I will be back soon!

Nice to see all those warm weather birds climbing up and down the trees and floating on the tepid water. Always like seeing Brown Creepers and Mergansers. Also nice to see sun and blue skies in a February photo. Maybe next Post will capture some of the newly arriving birds from the South.
Be patient, the warm weather photos are coming! Unfortunately they will have to tide us over for a while, as the temperatures are dropping to more seasonal this week.
