Upside Down

Downy Woodpecker

Or downside up. I have a really good excuse for not managing a blog post until now, which I hope never to use again. As much as I hate the passive voice, I’d rather phrase it like this: my car was totaled Sunday night on the way home from a meeting – the accident was unavoidable, not my fault, and I am happy to report there were no injuries and I will be getting a new, safer (should I have to crash into anything again) vehicle shortly.

It was 14 degrees Fahrenheit outside that night and I was so focused on getting the police to arrive that I forgot to take a picture of the damage, but that’s history now. So is the extraordinary lunar eclipse of that evening which I also forgot about in my distraction, although I was admiring the full moon through the window of the squad car as I sat in the back of it to keep warm while the police handled the investigation and report. So there are no spectacular images to share with this information, and I apologize.

American Goldfinch and House Finch

Instead here are some pictures from last weekend, when we got a total of about 9″ of snow, but had not yet plunged into the single digits and below which is where we are now.

I don’t anticipate getting any clearer photographs this weekend, but I will still try to capture the two Dark-Eyed Juncos and the Black-Capped Chickadee that I have seen only briefly. It was nice to see cardinals hanging out in a relaxed fashion.

I hope to be back soon, maybe even with a report about the new vehicle. In the meantime, I wish you all safety and warmth wherever you are!

  1. I’m so glad that you’re okay! The weather is not the best for driving anywhere. The birds are relaying on your feeders to get a decent meal. Thank you Lisa. Take care! 🙂

    • Thanks, H.J.! I’m starting to get over the whole insanity of it. It took me 2 hours to get home in a loaner after test-driving the next vehicle – it was snowing and icy and even in Chicago people have a hard time driving, but I made it! Going to go out and buy a snow-brush for the loaner car because there’s more in the forecast. The birds will be fed! 🙂

  2. I am glad that only your car was dented. It is not a fun experience being in a crash. I am sorry that you missed the moon as it was exciting to watch but it is not surprising after your experience. Keep warm!

    • Thanks. I wouldn’t recommend this experience as a method for anyone to get a discount on a new car but I am looking forward to a sturdier vehicle and I’m so grateful no one was injured. I’m marking my calendar for the next eclipse visible here – May 15/16, 2022!

  3. So sorry to hear about your accident, Lisa, very glad you and no one else were hurt. Wonderful series of photos of your birds who are surviving your cold! I especially love the American Goldfinch and House Finch shot, so pretty seeing them side by side in their colors!

    • Thanks, Donna! Yep, glad to be alive after all. Funny about surviving disasters, however small, is the contrast between feeling so vulnerable and then later, invincible, reinforcing the delusion of eternity that keeps me going. …And that was my favorite photo too. 🙂

  4. So glad to hear you’ve come through relatively unscathed, I just glanced at your intro and saw ‘car totaled’ and panicked for a second!
It sounds like you’re handling it well though, and I’d much rather see the birds than the vehicle damage. Good luck with the latest round of cold, I don’t expect many outings and that’s just fine.

    • Thanks, Frank! Truth be told it doesn’t take much to total a Prius C. I did not want to even consider the repair option.
The snow was a workout this morning! Not looking forward to the -45 windchills on Wednesday but then it looks like we will be melting next week. One day at a time. Take care yourself! 🙂
